Cancer
CANCER has touched
most of our lives in some way, both personally and profoundly or
as the helpful (or helpless) assistant and support system to a
loved one or comrade in need.
CANCER has touched the lives of 2 Dawson
County Women both personally and profoundly
who decided to allow their
own personal struggles and challenges become a call to action to
help others in need.
Maud Brodd, Cancer Survivor, of Dawson
County made a beautiful quilt called “Scrappy Mountain” to raise
money for her daughter, Sharon Keating, Cancer Survivor, Dawson
County to walk in the Atlanta 2 Day – It’s the Journey
Fundraiser for Georgia.
The women wrote a letter and included a picture of the
quilt, which they sent to their friends, family, and
organizations that they belong to stating their purpose and
intent. Checks
started arriving in the mail, “We were so overwhelmed by the
generosity of our friends and family, we are still so deeply
touched!” states Maud.
The quilt hung in the reception area of Keating Family
Medicine for several months. During that time they also placed a
copy of the letter in waiting room of Keating Family Medicine
along with a Pink Pig and again, “we were so touched, because at
one time the pig was so full, we had to empty it in order to fit
anything else in it!” says Vicki, Office Manager.
Anyone who made a donation, they threw their name in bowl
to have an opportunity to be the recipient of the
quilt.

Click to Replay On October 25th, they hosted a
reception and Silent Auction at
Serenity Medical Health &
Beauty Spa(1080
Lumpkin Campground Rd. Dawsonville,
706-265-6467)
to draw
the winner of the quilt, to honor all Cancer Survivors and to
Celebrate Life.
William J. Keating, MD gave a very informative talk about the
causes of cancer and prevention measures.
The winner of the quilt
was Barbra Ellett, 20 year Cancer Survivor,
Dawson
County. Appetizers and dessert were
catered by “Bite” from Alpharetta and provided by Allergan,
makers of Botox cosmetic, Juvederm and Latisse.
The spa has some ongoing specials in conjunction with the
fundraiser, check them out on facebook or text the word –

Maud and Sharon raised over
$2,400
on the
quilt and the Silent Auction for the
Atlanta
2 Day – It’s the Journey, but the final tally is not in yet –
“we know there are still a few checks on their way”, states
Maud. “We are so
thrilled and excited with the outcome and thank our friends and
family so much!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!” states
Sharon, “Cancer is a Journey we WISH no
one had to endure.
In the meantime, we will just keep doing our part to help others
along the way.”
